Sioux Sand is a sand cherry selection introduced in 1902. It was described as a large sand cherry selected from many thousands of seedlings in the South Dakota program. Later accounts called it the renowned South Dakota mother sand cherry. Plants distributed from the station were budded on native plum roots, which ties it directly to early prairie propagation and trial work. [S2] [S1]
Sources describe the fruit as smaller than some later seedlings but notable for its mild flavor. A later note says the small fruit, with a small seed, canned sweet, smooth, and tender. This gives Sioux Sand more of an identity as a preserving and kitchen fruit than as a showy large fruit type. A 1939 report from Morden, Manitoba, says it was surpassed in cooking quality by Oahe and Keyapaha. [S2] [S1]
The plant is described as somewhat prostrate in habit. Later bulletin material also places Sioux in a broader breeding story: many thousands of its seedlings were grown in South Dakota and Manitoba, and Brooks of Brooks, Alberta, is described as a seedling of a seedling of Sioux. This makes Sioux Sand not just an early introduction but a parent stock that helped advance prairie sand cherry breeding across the northern plains and prairie provinces. Direct hardiness language is not given here, but the documented South Dakota, Manitoba, and Alberta testing context places it firmly in northern prairie fruit work. [S1]
