Wiki Draft

Perkins No. 46 is a numbered apple selection in the Perkins series described by N. E. Hansen in A Study of Northwestern Apples. It belongs with Perkins Nos. 32 and 78. These were Malinda seedlings raised by F. I. Perkins of Red Wing, Minnesota. The bulletin says about 200 Malinda seedlings were just coming into bearing and were first shown at the Minnesota State Fair in September 1902. [S1]

The fruit is medium sized, roundish oblate, regular, and somewhat ribbed and angular. The skin is greenish yellow, thinly covered with mixed dark red and faint splashes. The dots are gray, minute, numerous, and distinct. The flesh is yellowish white, firm, fine grained, pleasant subacid, and rated good. [S1]

Hansen places it among the striped apples. The entry gives a wide, shallow, wrinkled basin; closed core; round cells; conical tube; basal stamens; and eleven plump seeds. A separate classification table also lists Perkins No. 46 in a striped class and notes round cells. [S1]

Its season is winter. The source does not give a harvest date, storage duration, tree habit, disease notes, or direct hardiness rating. Its cold climate relevance comes from its Minnesota origin and its inclusion in Hansen's northwestern apple bulletin, not from an explicit zone statement. [S1]

Read the parentage carefully. The source ties Perkins No. 46 to the origin note for Perkins No. 32, which identifies the group as seedlings from Malinda raised by F. I. Perkins. It does not name a second parent for Perkins No. 46. [S1]
