Transcendent Seedling was an unnamed winter apple raised by J. S. Harris of La Crescent, Minnesota, from seed of Transcendent crab. Hansen listed it among northwestern apples. He used it as evidence that seed from Transcendent crab could produce larger apple-type fruit, not only small crab fruit. [S1]
The fruit is medium sized, oblate, truncated, and slightly angular. The skin is greenish yellow with a thin covering of mixed and striped dull red. It has many small light-russet dots that roughen the surface. The cavity is wide, obtuse, deep, and regular, with a long stem. The basin is wide, rather shallow, and slightly wrinkled. The calyx is half open. [S1]
The flesh is white, moderately juicy, mild, pleasantly subacid, and rated good. Its season is winter. The class table also lists it among striped apples and repeats the winter season and wide, shallow, wrinkled basin. [S1]
No direct hardiness zone is given. The evidence is geographic and historical. It appears in a South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station bulletin on northwestern apples and was raised in southeastern Minnesota, within the upper Midwestern hardy apple context of the source. [S1]
Its parentage is only partly known. The maternal seed source was Transcendent crab, but the pollen parent is not named. Hansen links Transcendent Seedling with Mills as examples showing that large apples could be raised from Transcendent crab seed. [S1]
