Wiki Draft

Iowa is an Americana plum described as an early variety from northeastern Iowa. It was fruiting in South Dakota by the late nineteenth century, and an 1897 South Dakota bulletin lists it among plum varieties that had already fruited there. [S1] [S2]

The surviving source picture is practical rather than celebratory. South Dakota observers gave mixed reports from named growers. H. C. Warner of Forestburg said it kept well but was too small. A. Norby reported a small crop in 1902, though he said the fruit was good size that year and large in 1903. [S1]

Fruit quality also appears uneven. Norby said it was ripe on August 20 in 1902, and in 1903 he said it ripened with Odegard, placing it among the earlier plums in that trial context. He found it fair for eating out of hand, but said the skin was bitter or too acerb for cooking. He also noted that the fruit dropped badly. [S1]

For prairie growers, Iowa appears hardy enough to bear in South Dakota, but the record here does not give a formal zone rating. The stronger evidence is geographic: it was grown, fruited, and judged under South Dakota conditions. [S1] [S2] Its historical interest lies less in praise than in the blunt evaluation preserved around it: an early Americana plum that kept reasonably well, but seems to have fallen short in consistency, usefulness, and overall value. Norby's closing judgment was that it was of no special value. [S1]
